
DeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. When she performed in her summer stock she was enticed by the director to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt claimed that she never ever met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is best known for her part in Three's company's run from 1977 until 1984 as Janet Wood. This was an opportunity she was offered after being selected for the second pilot. DeWitt also appeared as Janet in an episode of the show in 1979. spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt was the last actor to appear in the show's 1984 finale. She also appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that, she stopped acting for several years. Acting was her first return on stage in June of 1991 when she appeared in the Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she played in Spring Fling a 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain featured the character who was modeled after her voiced by another actress in 1997. She was featured in an episode of Cybill and also made an appearance on Living Single's last episode. Six of her TV shows of the 2000s include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as and Call of the Wild.
